Vera
Driving time: 30 minutes
Vera is a destination of two halves; both of them worthy of a day trip from Casa Sol y Luna. Vera Pueblo – the town – is an attractive and traditional village where you can really immerse yourself in local history. We wholeheartedly recommend the Church de la Encarnación and the town hall for a glimpse into the past. And the Ethnographic and Archaeological Museum is full of interesting finds. The other side of Vera is its playful, care-free side. Vera Playa – the beach – is one of Spain’s largest naturist communities, where everyone is welcome to strip off, get comfy, and take a dip in the Med.
Mojacar
Driving time: 40 minutes
The famous whitewashed village of Mojacar blends beautiful Moorish-style architecture with the laidback lifestyle of the Spanish coast. With tiny alleyways and hidden pathways giving way to airy open squares lined with tapas bars and restaurants, it’s easy to spend an entire day exploring here. For the best views, we recommend stopping for a cold drink at Plaza Nueva, where you can gaze out over the valley below. While wandering around Mojacar, you won’t be able to ignore a symbol that appears everywhere – in shops, on postcards, on statues, and more. Learn about this local legend.
Albox
Driving time: 10 minutes
Albox is, quite literally, just down the road from Casa Sol y Luna. While it’s an attractive town to visit, set amongst the fruit orchards and olive groves, it’s also our local commercial centre. You can find shops, supermarkets, restaurants, bars, banks, a post office, and lots more, so you may find it quite handy during your trip. There’s also a weekly market that’s well worth a visit. Driving through the town, you might notice that Albox’s roundabouts certainly grab your attention. Many of them feature statues and monuments recognising and celebrating Albox’s rich history, its culture, and its people.
Huércal-Overa
Driving time: 20 minutes
Just 20 minutes down the road from Casa Sol y Luna is this historic town. It’s believed that there were once two castles here, forming part of a secure fortress for defending the Kingdom of Granada. Today, it’s a vibrant little destination striving to keep local history alive through its multiple museums. Huércal-Overa has a big handicrafts industry, so it’s great for picking up some souvenirs. And if you’re staying with us to enjoy some local hikes, there are quite a few walking routes that travel right through Huércal-Overa, including the Paraje Alto de la Rábida, Paraje La Sierrecica, and Via Verde.
Garrucha
Driving time: 40 minutes
If you’re travelling as a family, Garrucha is a great day out, and it’s only 40 minutes away from Casa Sol y Luna. The Malecon promenade is spectacular, with a palm-tree lined beach on one side, and a colourful row of shops, bars, and restaurants on the other. It’s right by the fishing port, so the fresh fish served up is amazing. You can actually walk right along the beach, all the way from Playa de Garrucha to Vera Playa. It takes between 1 – 1.5 hours, but the seaside views are spectacular and there are plenty of places to stop for drinks along the way. It’s a lovely way to spend a sunny day.
